Susan Larimer
Amissville area smoking marijuana. In the car with the two young men was Charles’ (Chucky’s) sister Susan. “Richie suggested a B and E (breaking and entering). I told him it was a bad idea—he said ‘Come on.’ It was a mutual agreement between Richie and me to B and E Mrs. Compton’s house.”
After leaving empty-handed the first time, Chucky Larimer testified that it was also Richie Eastham’s idea to reenter the house after Tommy Grohs had left with Mrs. Compton.
Larimer testified that “nothing was said with my Mom at the house—the plan was hatched in the car. There was no conversation about the break-in. She didn’t know about it ’til the morning I was arrested. She broke into tears and said ‘What in the world is going on?’.”
Larimer’s younger sister Susan corroborated his version of the evening’s events. Testimony placed Susan Larimer inside the house with Larimer and Eastham the first (unsuccessful) time they entered it; the second time Larimer and Eastham went inside she stayed outside with Mrs. Larimer’s car. “We didn’t tell (Mrs. Larimer) about the break-in— we were scared,” she said.
Susan Larimer admitted to being the one who cut Mrs. Compton’s telephone cord with a pair of wirecutters supplied by Richie Eastham, according to her testimony. She also testified that the alcohol and marijuana allegedly consumed that night by the principals was supplied by Richie Eastham.
Mrs. Larimer also took the stand in her own defense. She testified that she was “feeling poorly” that day. She said that she gave the children money to go bowling, and that they left the house about 8 or 8:30 p.m. Later Chucky came back and asked to borrow her car, explaining that Richie Eastham’s car was out of gas and that they had to take Tommy Grohs home. “I told him to be home early, and to leave some gas in the car because I had to go to work early,” Mrs. Larimer said.
In response to questioning by Mr. Payne, Mrs. Larimer denied knowledge of any conversations about the break-in or about the children being stupid. She also denied going to the motel in Warrenton to talk to the two boys, as well as ever having seen the items recovered by the police which were taken in the break-in.
