Pet owners who give their dogs chocolate could be risking their pet’s health.
Chocolate contains theobromine, which may have harmful effects on your dog’s heart, kidneys, or central nervous system.
The effects of chocolate on your dog are about the same as those a person gets from heavy coffee drinking. Both chocolate and coffee increase heart rate and urination.
Unsweetened chocolate contains much more of the toxic substance than sweetened chocolate. Just two and a quarter ounces of unsweetened chocolate can bring on toxic signs and possible death in a 22pound dog.
Signs of chocolate poisoning are vomiting, depression and/or excitation, increased urination, muscle tremors, diarrhea and irregular heart beats.
If chocolate poisoning is suspected, consult a veterinarian.
