The House of Representatives has passed, and Rep. Slaughter has supported, a resolution that would confirm the $11.7 billion in budget savings achieved through the March 1 deficit reduction targets called for under the Gramm-Rudman law of 1985.
After the Supreme Court decision on the Gramm-Rudman law, this action became necessary to make constitutional the automatic reductions begun under the GrammRudman law before the court action.
The automatic reductions were in process because Congress failed to do its part in fixing spending priorities for this budget year.
Rep. Slaughter said that it is time for Congress to act promptly on a series of appropriation bills to meet the deficit reduction targets it set in the Gramm-Rudman Budget Act and to avoid the automatic budget reductions for the next budget year beginning October 1, 1986.
