Baliles told the USDA Secretary that more than two-thirds of Virginia is in an extreme drought situation. He said the industry of agriculture is experiencing its most serious difficulties since the Great Depression.
“Our farmers need all available help from state and federal agencies.” the Governor stated in his letter. “Therefore, I am requesting that you determine other actions the USDA may take to assist farmers, including livestock producers, with their hay and feed needs.”
Requests from the Boards of Supervisors in 12 other counties have been received and the ASCS office has been asked to initiate the damage assessment reports. The Governor would act to have these counties declared as soon as the necessary information is received.
Should Lyng approve the disaster requests, farmers in those counties would be eligible for lowinterest loans but must qualify on an individual basis.
