every year, said Buck Kline, Area Forester. The United States Forest Service estimates that the South will lose about 15 million acres of woodland over the next 50 years. The land base for growing timber is being reduced so we must better manage the wooded acres that remain, Mr. Kline said. The burden for tetter management is in the hands of the private landowner since they own more than 75 percent of Virginia’s commercial forests, he added.
