Another hot prospect is Mike Dearing, who moved up from last year’s JV team which placed third in the conference. Dearing is 5’ 10” tall, with a 40-inch vertical leap. Coach
Leake expects him to be a strong force inside. His JV teammate, Matthew Settle, scored 16 points in the first scrimmage, hitting eight 25foot jumpers. “He’s an excellent outside shooter,” Mr. Leake said.
The coach said that the toughest competition for the Panthers will certainly come from Manassas Park, ranked in the pre-season poll to finish first in the conference. The Cougars were the Bull Run District • champions last year, and are returning all five of their starters this season.
Last year the Panthers finished the season 12 and 8, and “we would like to do better than that, to set higher goals,” Coach Leake said. “Barring injuries, if we can stay healthy, keep a positive attitude and not get overconfident, we’ll be successful. It’s important to know that we have the support of the school and the community,” he added.
On a personal note, Coach Leake said that having played basketball at Rappahannock, “I’m really looking forward to coaching against the coaches I used to play against.”
