To the editor:
I feel a civic responsibility to share my reactions to the page 1 article on migrant housing in Nov. 20 Rappahannock News. It is incredible to me that 20 years after the civil rights movement of the 1960s, such blatant racism is publicly displayed, debated and reported in our community. Mr. Estes, for example, was reported as saying, “We’ll be saying, move in, bring your children, we’re going to educate your kids, you’re a permanent resident. . . I don’t agree with that...” And Mr. Gorfein complains, “We see the potential for having every migrant laborer in Rappahannock County next door to us . . . We don’t think that’s fair.” And then there’s his comment about “25 people across from a nice family.”
If anyone in the reported discussion were really concerned about “too much growth,” rather than the race or nationality of the people under discussion, one would expect to see some data being discussed. How many migrant workers do county farmers need and use annually? What proportion are likely to stay on
