salesman was away that day, and the call was taken by a man who identified himself as the “Business Manager” of the whole dealership (a person Who drew a lot of water in those circles).
“May I help you?” inquired the Business Manager in a tone of voice that our hero visualized as belonging to a person wearing a cutaway coat with a white carnation in the lapel.
“Ah ha,” thought our hero, “I’ve gotten to someone who can deal!” and told this Voice all about his visit the day before, the price quoted (“All the facts, Ma’am”).
After a short pause the Voice asked our man to wait while he got out the salesman’s notes and went over the deal. Now, this was on Ma Bell’s best daytime rates, so our hero was listening hard, but the Voice took his time, and finally came back on the line.
“Yaas, I’ve located the notes, now just what was it you wanted?”
“I like your truck,” our hero replied, “but I can’t quite make that $7,950 so I am offering you $7,700 and my old car for that certain truck.”
