Winter arrives December 21 at 11:02 p.m. as the Sun enters Capricomus. This is the shortest day with only 9 hours and 18 minutes of daylight.

Weatherwise we can expect December to have average temperatures and precipitation, although the overall forecast for the winter of 1986-’87 calls for a 15 percent increase in snowfall. Protecting trees
The old custom of painting the first three or four feet of a tree trunk. white was thought by many to be for decorative purposes. Not so. The coating is to protect the tree’s southern exposure during winter from sun scald which allows subsequent freezing and rupture of the cells in the cambium layer beneath the bark, resulting in the bark’s splitting and admitting disease organisms which can attack the tree.
