Helen LaCava, Math Department chairman, stated that the students were ecstatic when they heard the results. “I was really glad they did well on this first part,” she said. “Something like this helps them see that the thinking skills that they have are not specifically related to a problem they get in class, but are helpful with a lot of different ideas.”

The contest consists of six parts to be given throughout the year. After each part is taken the scores and names of the five highest scoring students are submitted. A record is kept of each school’s score and at the end of the year a plaque is given to the two schools that have the highest total score.
