as year-round residents if this is allowed? How much population growth annually would that cause? How does this compare to our standards of acceptable growth rates? What are the economics of this? If they do become regular residents, by what mechanism will they pay their fair share of local taxes to support the schools? What do profitable farms and orchards contribute to our local tax base? What do we lose by losing our farms and orchards?

But" the discussion did not proceed to this rational level of analysis, and my interpretation is that the reason is based purely on stereotyped, racist images of the kinds of people under discussion (in contrast to “nice” families like Mr. Gorfein’s).

It’s about time we looked for ways to sponsor immigrant residents to our county. We need the willingness to work and contribute to the productivity of our enterprises. More importantly, we need an infusion of different ideas, energies and perspectives, as your article attests.
