“We do expect people to come from faraway places, just to experience the restaurant,” Mr. Lynch said. It’s already happening. “People flying in from California to Dulles to eat - it’s been happening since the article in the San Francisco Chronicle.”
(Last spring The Inn was chosen by the winner of a Chronicle recipe contest as the restaurant, of any in the country, at which she wished to have dinner and spend the night - all expenses paid, including travel.)
“The Relais et Chateaux is the tourist’s Bible for French travelers,” Mr. O’Connell said. “If you stay in (member establishments) you will have a flawless, unique experience. It’s fascinating - to combine that certain standard of quality, yet keep intact the spirit of adventure, the uniqueness of experience, at each one. They’re all different.”
Mr. Lynch stressed that The Inn’s latest honor “will not make a difference in what we do . . . Every time we visit an internationallyknown restaurant, there are many people from the surrounding area.” International reputation, he said, “means only that the restaurant offers an individual, personal experience which can’t be repeated anywhere else in the world. Part of the charm is the restaurant’s integration into its locale - its sense of place.”
“Our European patrons,” Mr. O’Connell added, “have been delighted with The Inn’s setting in Le Petite Washington.”
