School Board asked the supervisors for their intentions regarding the capital outlay project but the supervisors have remained silent on the issue.
At Monday’s board meeting, J. R. Latham announced that he’d received several phone calls from constituents, asking for a public hearing on the high school building program.
“I’d like to see the academic portions (of the high school capital outlay project) built, but I have reservations about the gymnasium,” said Newbill Miller. “The people in my district have reservations about the gymnasium.” In addition, he questioned the need for remodeling the old gym into an auditorium.
“We have a 58-cent tax rate right now . . . And coming up, we have a landfill, which is extremely costly, we have the handicapped access (to the county courthouse), we have the dog pound. They’re all paid for with local money,” Mr. Miller continued. “Ask the School Board to devise an academic plan (for capital outlay), and I’ll support it.”
