the rapid growth of uses of manmade polymers has been pioneered by men such as Hermann Staudinger, Karl Zeigler, Guilio Natta, and Paul J. Flory, all of whom won Nobel Prizes in chemistry for thencontributions to the intricate and sophisticated processes of polymer science.

In 1938 there were nearly a dozen commercial polymers on the market. Most were cheap items such as buttons, beads, and knitting need-les. Since then hundreds of new products have been developed by chemical engineers with properties to fit their customers’ needs - nylon molding powders which, when formed into gears, can outlast steel; indestructible fluorocarbons for lubricants and refrigerators, versatile polyethylenes for packaging and insulation, and durable acrylics for long-lasting paints.

Given that kind of potential, today’s graduate should think twice if someone whispers the magic word “polymers.”
