Over the objections of Newbill Miller, the Rappahannock supervisors have set Dec. 18 for a public hearing on the high school expansion program AND the acceptance of a $1.5 million literary loan to build the design which was approved last year by the State Department of Education.
The long delayed expansion has been under consideration since 1976 when a joint School Board/Board of Supervisors committee ackowledged the overcrowded conditions at Rappahannock County High School. Since then, mandates for new classes, particularly in the area of special education, have continued to shrink the available classroom space, a development only partially offset by the addition of four trailers (which are showing signs of age and termite infestation).
In the past decade, several expansion proposals stopped at the drawing board stage, failing to gain the support of the full School Board, much less the Board of Supervisors.
