Mr. Clifton believes that artists need to “invest in their own art, by providing the income and time when - needed, to finance further art in the j future.” This works better, he said/ if artists have employment that is I project-oriented rather than a yearround , 9 to 5 routine.

His seminar, The Eclectic Artist, will be presented Friday, Dec. 12, starting at 7 p.m. with a potluck sup- - per at Blackwater Homestead, one ‘ of Sam’s completed projects. He has ; slides tracing his development as an ' artist, from handpainted fabrics to ; high-tech tensile structures. His commentary will include his differ-^ ent strategies for supporting him- ■' self, from taxi-driver (another New York City job) to construction pro- * ject manager, and .the effect that these jobs have had on the creative ' process.

There will be a discussion of how to live decently and still have time and energy for art, how to avoid" compromise while producing art that' pays, and possible new directions for “ art bom out of conventional employment.

Mr. Clifton has enjoyed his business ventures as well as his artistic - life: not all artists are as lucky. He hopes that artists who come to the seminar will provide some advice from their own experience.
