long lines waiting to see Santa and parties for all ages are everywhere.

December tradition also holds that nearly 2,000 unfortunate people across the nation will die in motor vehicle crashes involving the use of alcohol, according to National Safety Council statistics. Last year, 72 persons were killed on Virginia’s highways during December.

To focus attention on this potentially devastating occurrence, the Virginia State Police are gearing up to conduct intensified DUI patrols and motor vehicle safety checks beginning Friday, Dec. 12. During the motor vehicle safety checks, troopers will check driver’s licenses and registration, obvious safety equipment such as lights and tires, and they’ll be alert to identifying drinking drivers.
