To the editor:
We, as officers of the Rappahannock County Elementary School Student, Parent, Teacher Association (SPTA), wish to urge our Board of Supervisors to adopt the capital outlay program. In order to lend even more support to our efforts, we wish to encourage all Rappahannock parents, grandparents, future parents, and all those interested in quality public education to back this effort.
We’ve been presented the facts, and no one can dispute that the current high school is in drastic need of improvement. Our children will be facing a world where a quality education will be absolutely necessary to enable them to be self-sufficient, independent citizens.
But we, as parents, want more than self-sufficiency for our children. We want them to be able to compete in a highly competitive world, to be able to be an astronaut, a doctor, a media specialist, an actor, an Olympic athlete or a physical education teacher. The capital outlay program will help students to prepare for any of these careers, as it improves the science labs, library, theater and gymnasium as well as simply providing students a place to eat lunch - sitting in a seat in a cafeteria, instead of eating from a paper bag seated on the hallway floor. Certainly our children deserve better than that.
