The format of the American Legion Oration contest is particularly grueling. Contestants must first speak for a minimum of seven minutes without benefit of notes, prompting, or even podium. Later, they must speak extemporaneously for at least three minutes on a question about the Constitution drawn by the judges.
All of the winning contestants and their coaches received cash awards and medals. The first place winner will continue in the contest at the regional level. The contest will conclude in the spring with the competition of state winners from all over the nation. As 1987 is the bicentennial of the writing of the Constitution, the American Legion has made a large effort to interest high school students in this contest which causes participants to read, study, and analyse that document.
