Wakefield students Laura Dose and Julie Whitworth won first and second places respectively in the American Legion Oration Contest held last weekend in Front Royal. The third place winner was Cynthia Reed of Warren County High School.
The topic of the contest was, as always, any issue related to the United States Constitution.
Laura Dose’s first place speech was entitled “Children on Death Row.” She examined the constitutionality of the death sentence for underage children.
Julie Whitworth’s speech was entitled “The Media and First Amendment Rights.” Arguing that the American news media have violated the spirit of the First Amendment guarantees of freedom of, speech,
vision news often encourages international terrorism by providing it a “theatre in which to act out its grisly deeds.”
The third place winner Cynthia Reed argued in her speech against Miss Whitworth claimed
