The not-in-my-backyard (NIMBY) syndrome that meets every landfill proposal is showing up again, this time in the Amissville area. Property owners there have collected 100 signatures opposing a solid waste disposal facility now under consideration for the Stover tract on Route 639.
The county has applied for a state permit for a landfill on both the 100-acre Stover tract and a 400-acre' farm off Route 211 between Massie’s Comer and Ben Venue. A public hearing on the two applications is set for Monday, April 6.
The petitioners maintain that a landfill in “the furthermost northeast comer of Rappahannock County” will require expensive hauling and continued reliance on dumpsters as trash depositories. “The operation of hauling numerous truckloads per week of GARBAGE, ANIMAL CARCASSES, REFUSE, TRASH and other unsavory matter from ALL OTHER SECTIONS of the county would add to the overload the entire county is experiencing from existing large-sized truck traffic congestion on all major and minor roads and add to the con
