With the start of the high school baseball season only days away, Coach Gary Leake had high praise for the efforts of the Panther varsity.
“Overall, they are a young team - - without a great deal of seasoned varsity experience. But what they lack in experience, they make up in determination and hustle. They are anxious to learn, and I can see the improvement every day.”
The Panthers have only two seniors this season, captains Wayne Foster and Reggie Williams. Both will start; Foster at first base and Williams in right field.
Rappahannock will field seven juniors on the varsity this year, led by team captain Greg Smith. Four were named to the starting team. Three sophomores will also be on the field for the season opener, to be played at Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal, Saturday at 3 p.m.
Coach Leake pointed to the depth of his pitching staff - seven, led by 6’3” 190 pound sophomore Doug Smith - as a definite strength. Reggie Williams, a right-handed curveballer, and junior Matthew
