Only single-hook flies, spinners and other artificial lures are allowed. No bait of any kind may be used.
The Rapidan and Staunton Rivers have been designated as Fish-for-Fun areas. Fishing in those streams is restricted to artificial flies or lures with one barbless hook. All fish caught must be immediately returned to the stream. Fish-for-Fun streams are open to anglers year-round.
Park Superintendent Ronald Wrye has announced that, due to low population levels, several streams in the park will be closed to fishing this year. Naturalists hope that, by protecting the few remaining fish, the populations will recover.
Streams closed for the 1987 season include: Lands Run, Overall Run, Fultz Run, South Fork Dry Run, North Fork Dry Run and Doyles River.
Anyone fishing in the Park must have in their possession a valid Virginia fishing license. Licenses, including a non-resident license good for five days, may be purchased at the Big Meadows Wayside or from local sporting goods stores.
