Rabies cases
reported up
A significant outbreak of rabies has recently been reported from the Richmond area. Resurgence of cases can also be expected in this area with the onset of warmer weather.
The current epidemic of rabies began in Virginia in 1981. Since that time rabies has been identified in bats, bobcats, cats, cows, dogs, foxes, groundhogs, horses, raccoons, sheep and skunks. One of the most interesting statistics covering this outbreak is that of the 587 confirmed cases of animal rabies in Virginia since 1984, 68 percent of those animals infected were raccoons.
In the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District, which includes, Rappahannock, Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison and Orange counties, 73 v cases of animal rabies have been con--• firmed in the last two years. Many of* these rabid animals had contact with humans, pets and livestock, requir- * ing post exposure treatment and animal quarantine or destruction.
Remember that all warmblooded animals are susceptible to rabies and that certain precautions should be taken:
Vaccinate your dogs and cats. The number of rabid cats outnumber rabid dogs almost 10 to 1 in the latest outbreak.
