Settle, “a hard-throwing lefthander,” are also expected to give opposing teams some trouble, Coach Leake said.
With the exception of second base, which is “still up for grabs” in a three-way battle for a starting spot between Thomas Jones, Wayne Dodson and Scotty Tummeyer, the lineup is set.
Coach Leake expects the starters for Saturday’s opener to be led by pitcher Matthew Settle. Wayne Foster will be on first base, Greg Smith at shortstop, Tony Clark at third, Doug Smith in left field, James Walters in center and Reggie Williams in right. Wesley Jenkins will be behind the plate.
“It’s a very flexible team, with a lot of guys who can play different positions. It makes it very easy for a coach.”
Coach Leake added that “most of the team played JV ball — that gave them a winning attitude. One of the keys to a successful program is knowing how to win -- and being willing to work as hard as is necessary to win. They don’t take it for granted.”
