The latest emergency medical unit in Culpeper County has been put in service by the Salem Volunteer Fire Department.
The unit is staffed by the company’s emergency service complement of 13, headed by Capt. Gary Lunceford and Sgt. Liz Shifflett.
Operation of the unit was certified in late February. The first call was to “The Hill,” farm of Mr. Oliver Durant.
Donations last fall in response to a department appeal paid for equipping the ambulance. Hie 1982 Ford chassis on which is mounted a Swab ambulance body, was donated by Fairfax County late last year.
Until the fully equipped rescue unit went into service, the Salem department’s emergency personnel offered a First Responder service. On these first responder calls, personnel could render emergency medical service, but could not provide transportation to a hospital.
Now company personnel can provide emergency transportation and establish a communication link with area hospitals in the Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance.
Last year the Salem company’s First Responder unit answered about 200 calls. The company’s firstdue area stretches west from a point east of Route 745 off Route 522, to the Rappahannock and Madison county lines.
