All four of Wakefield School’s National Merit Semi-Finalists for 1987, Sean Bennett, Stephen Butler, Lisa Larimer, and Hank Sohn, have met the requirements necessary to qualify as finalists in this year’s competition for National Merit Scholarships.
The selection of about 6,000 Merit Scholars from among the 13,500 finalists is now in progress, with announcements to be made in March and April of the national scholarship winners.
In order to qualify for the finalist category, semi-finalists had to make SAT scores that were equivalent to the PSAT/NMSQT scores that determined semi-finalist standing. In addition, the semi-finalists had to document high academic performance throughout their secondary school years, including their senior year to date.
The finalist category is a very select group representing feWei^than one-half of one per cent-of American college-bound seniors.
Wakefield, a 14-year-old private school for grades pre-kindergarten through high school, located in rural Rappahannock County, has the highest percentage of National Merit Finalists in its senior class.
