It never ceases to amaze me that of the millions of fry that hatch, only a few thousand survive to carry on the species.
As some species of fish start their annual spawning ritual, this is the very time that they are the most vulnerable to the angler.
Crappie, for instance, are very social fish, and can be found in groups or schools virtually the year around. However, as the water warms in springtime, the crappie tend to group into' larger and larger schools as the roe within their bodies matures nearer and nearer to spawning time.
When water temperatures reach 50 to 55 degrees, the larger female fish begin to defend small, onesquare-foot territories. These territories will be approximately where their eggs will be dispersed to be fertilized by a nearby male.
During these hectic days of urgency, crappie can be caught easily by dropping small minnows or small lures into the brushy areas they have selected for spawning. Even fish biologists differ in opinion as to whether crappie feed on these minnows or lures or attack them as intruders into their territories.
