Grim faces met the grim news at Tuesday night’s work session: the 1987-88 school budget as presented two weeks ago by Superintendent Robert Estabrook will take a 28 percent increase in local money.
Subtracting anticipated federal and state receipts from the $3,432,210 in school expenditures contemplated by the superintendent leaves $436,267. “What’s left becomes the county’s share,” Mr. Estabrook said.
With one cent on the local tax rate generating approximately $22,000 in revenue this year, funding that difference would jump the rate by 20 cents.
“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” said Chairman Beverly Massie. “I don’t see how the county is going to pick up $436,267!”
“Realistically, it’s going to be a hard one to swallow,” agreed Nancy Reeve.
The squeeze on local dollars comes from two mqjor factors, according to the superintendent. Rappahannock’s schools saw a drop in enrollment this year, with 39 fewer students than anticipated.
