Clark site still an option
The agreements with Culpeper and Community Trash specify that the 120 hauling period will take place within eight months. Administrative assistant John McCarthy explained that the deadline was included at Culpeper County’s insistence. “They want it over and done with. They don’t want it to drag on into next year,” he explained.
Asked why the 120-day period doesn’t begin July 1 with the scheduled closing of the Clark dump, Mr. McCarthy guessed that Rappahannock’s supervisors wanted “the flexibility” to pursue the option of using that privately owned and operated landfill as an interum solution to the trash emergency. “We’re going to have our consultant determine if there’s available space there and point out same to the state, if there is.”
As to progress on what the supervisors hope will be a long term solution to the trash crisis, Mr. McCarthy reported that preliminary soil surveys have been completed on the 100-acre Stover tract near Amissville and samples are now being tested in the laboratory. The county has a contract to buy the Stover tract, contingent upon the Virginia Division of Solid Waste Management’s issuance of a permit for a landfill there.
