Creative Writing Department at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa., addressed the graduates at Wakefield’s commencement, telling them that “most commencement addresses are filled with highly forgettable advice couched in language which soars to immediately merited oblivion.”
He urged them to take to heart some concrete, if unusual, advice.
“Watch television regularly,” he told the audience, quickly qualifying this surprising statement. “There are some excellent programs which should become part of your regular viewing habits as graduates. MacNeil-Lehrer Report, Firing Line, The McLaughlin Group, the network news programs — these are programs which will keep you focused on the human condition.”
“Read magazines regularly,” he continued. “The Atlantic, Harpers, Public Policy, Time, Newsweek, The New Republic, these provide insight.”
