She related an anecdote about Henry Ford to illustrate the value of shifting focus, of creating new insight. Mr. Ford, the story goes, hired an efficiency expert to evaluate his operations. The expert found things were run well, except for one man who, he said, spent his day sitting in his office with his feet propped on his desk staring into space. “That man,” the expert told Mr. Ford, “is wasting your money.”
“That man,” Mr. Ford is said to have replied, “once had an idea which saved us millions of dollars. At that time, his feet were planted right where they are now.”
“Be courageous,” Mrs. Bloss urged the graduates. “Don’t be afraid to fail. If you don’t fail once in a while, it means you’re not trying hard enough. Nothing in life worth having comes easy.” And, she added, “remember that a person who is never wrong is not doing anything wrong—or right.”
“What is behind you,” she concluded, “is merely the beginning of a lifetime of learning.”
