Discussions on federal and
state mandates took up a considerable portion of time at the Rappahannock School Board’s four-hour meeting on June 14. Once again, School Board members expressed dismay, consternation and disagreement with requirements forced upon localities by higher jurisdictions. Superintendent 0. A. Norton asked the board for authority to sign assurances of compliance on behalf of the county school system with the federal Rehabilitation Act. ‘This merely assures that we will comply with the handicapped law,” he said, adding that agreement was a prerequisite for any federal funding.

At a special meeting on
Monday, the Rappahannock supervisors reappointed Nelson Lane, representative from Stonewall-Hawthome District, to a four-year term on the county School Board. Lane presented the supervisors with a stack of petitions in his support, signed, he said, by his fellow School Board members and 407 residents of Stonewall-Hawthome District.
On the recommendation of Superintendent Robert Estabrook, the Rappahannock School Board last week implemented the sick leave bank requested in March by the Rappahannock County Education Association. The action to set up the bank on a one-year trial came on a split vote with Robert Eastham and Nelson Lane opposed,
