Helicopters

The Potomac Edison Company will conduct its summer helicopter inspection of the electrical system’s transmission lines beginning this week, as part of the utility’s ongoing maintenance program.
Helicopter flights are scheduled to take place for the utility’s lines in and around Frederick, Hagerstown, Cumberland, Oakland, Romney, Martinsburg and Winchester for about two weeks.
The helicopter crew will survey Potomac Edison’s extra-high-voltage transmission system, which includes 230 kV and 500 kV lines, to look for equipment that needs repair or replacement. Helicopters are used to scout the system, especially in outlying areas, because they can hover as dose as 20 feet about the lines.
Once inspection of the transmission system is completed at the end of June, Potomac Edison will begin surveying sub-transmission lines throughout its service territory, which includes 7,300 square miles in parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
