Council member Nan Thomasson said that the town is quite dark at night and suggested that new street lights would be of benefit to town residents and tourists alike.
Members of the audience questioned the increase of over $20,000 in the preliminary town budget. Mrs. Willis explained that a great deal of the expense was for salaries, including a paid secretary, a paid attorney, and a full-time town maintenance man.
Joan St. Clair cited bleak national economic forecasts for the coming year. ‘You may just not be able to do all that you want/ she cautioned.
Mrs. Willis replied that the town has always been extremely frugal, moving from one project to the next only when it was prudent to do so. “We’ve never believed in deficit spending,” she said.
Mrs. Thomasson emphasized that the street lights were part of her “wish list” and that many of the improvements needed by the town would be accomplished only as funds become available.
Mr. Skowronski requested that the town’s boards adopt a schedule of regular monthly meetings so that interested residents could attend.
Mr. Fisher said that, having received the informal approval of council to incorporate the town and water authority (which actually functions as a town department) budgets, he could complete the overall budget.
