There are now approximately 140 animals at the shelter. Because of a lack of money, Shirley has had to say no to many who have called wanting her to take in litters of unwanted animals.
Shirley’s devotion to the cats is best evidenced in the story of T. C., a beautiful yellow and white kitten that was picked up near starvation on a lonely country road. He was taken to the shelter along with nine others. Mrs. Minton found good homes for seven. Two were so badly malnourished when found that their little pain-ravaged bodies just couldn’t overcome their horrible beginnings. However, T.C. quickly became one of Shirley’s favorites. For many weeks, she loved him, spoiled him and desperately tried to nurture him back to health. He followed her every move, insisted on being held and cuddled, delighted in attention and even had his favorite pillow in Shirley’s bedroom.
