On May 9,1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first Mother’s Day Proclamation, designating the second Sunday in May as a day set aside to express “our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” Today, cards, flowers and special family occasions honor mothers throughout the nation.
The idea for a day set aside to honor fathers is credited to a Mrs. John Dodd, of Spokane, Washington. She searched for a suitable way to honor her father, who had reared six children by himself after the death of his wife.
