To the editor:
In regard to the Shirley Minton unfunded, cageless, no-kill cat shelter located at Route 5, Box 281, Abingdon, we wish to advise that animal lovers erased the nugor medical bills relating to Shirley’s openheart surgery and provided cat food and essential vet care. Otherwise, there would have been no alternative but to close the shelter.
When Mrs. Minton began her haven for cats six years ago, she fortunttely did not foresee the many adversities with which she would be faced, including severe vision problems, eye surgery, a mjyor fire, a theft and her almost fatal heart problems. Neither did she foresee the outpouring of generosity that would come her way when her plight became known to the public.
Presently, the Mintons are back to where they were before the critical illness struck. There is no supply of cat food built up and there is no money left. Donations are few and far between. Shirley will be under a doctor’s care and on medication permanently. The portion of Dan’s income previously reserved for the cats now has to be used for Shirley’s ongoing medical care. No longer can the Mintons handle the awesome burden alone.
