In all 106 wines were entered in the 1987 Competition. There were 69 gold, silver and bronze medal winners. All the wines and medals were displayed during the two day festival which attracted thousands from the middle Atlantic states.
The modern Virginia wine industry has grown in leaps and bounds. With only five wineries licensed in 1978, the number has grown to thirty-three with two more ready to go on line. There are more than 1,600 acres planted in the Old Dominion, mostly in vinifera variety grapes. While in 1980 60,000 gallons were produced by Virginia Farm Wineries, the 1986 crush yielded 280,000 gallons, nearly a five-fold increase in production. Virginia wines accounted for 1.7 percent of the total wine case sales in Virginia in 1986.
The Virginia Wineries Association was founded in 1978. Its membership is composed of Virginia Farm Wineries. The Association represents the Virginia wine industry in many areas of concern including legislation and education and sponsors the largest statewide wine festival on the East Coast.
