Fund allocations totaling $795 million for highway construction on the state’s interstate, primary, urban and secondary systems and for mass transit, ports and airports were tentatively approved by the Commonwealth Transportation Board last week at its meeting in Northern Virginia. The tentative allocations are for the 1987-88 fiscal year beginning July 1.
The funds reflect the first full year of revenue increases provided by the 1986 General Assembly special session on transportation last September.
“Allocations reflect a $363 million increase over previous estimates that were made prior to General Assembly action last September,” said Commonwealth Transportation Commissioner Ray D. Pethtel. “These additional resources allow the department to advertise, add and advance 550 projects in our sixyear improvement program.”
The board’s action Thursday was based on the department’s recommendations, which were developed following a series of nine public hearings held throughout Virginia this spring.
A breakdown of the next fiscal year’s allocations by system is as follows:
• Mass transit, $74.9 million, up from an anticipated $35.2 million before General Assembly action.
• Ports, $17.6 million
• Airports, $10 million
• Primary system, including the arterial network, $164 million, up from an anticipated $59 million before General Assembly action.
• Urban system, $123 million, up from an anticipated $56.2 million before General Assembly action.
