Meredyth Vineyards of Middleburg is the winner of the 1987 Virginia Governor’s Cup. The Cup is awarded to the best Virginia wine entered in the Governor’s Cup competition.
Meredyth’s non-vintage Sauvignon Blanc won the Cup as well as a Gold Medal during the judging, which took place on May 31st. Robert Harper of Naked Mountain Vineyard was Chairman of the 1987 Competition.
The Cup was presented to Meredyth President Archie M. Smith during ceremonies held at Commonwealth Park in Culpeper during the Virginia Wineries Festival. On hand for the presentation was Virginia Wineries Association President and Meredyth winemaker Dr. Archie M. Smith III, Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr. and Festival Chairman C. J. Reeder of Burnley Vineyards.
Meredyth Vineyards is located in Middleburg in the heart of the Piedmont Hunt Country. Started in 1972, Meredyth is a family operation with 55 acres on Sterling Farm. The vineyard and winery operation is a family affair with Archie Smith serving as President, Dr. Archie Smith III* winemaker and Dody Smith handling the finances.
The winner of the Governor’s Cup is each year chosen from among the Gold Medal winners. Other Gold Medal winners for 1987 are:
