Rappahannock County residents put in a strong showing at the Culpeper-Madison-Rappahannock Farm Show, held last weekend in Culpeper. County participants numbered among their awards a Grand Champion (Michael Brown), a First Champion (Missy Hinkell), a Reserve Champion (Tyrone Starks), a Best in Show (Amy Richardson) as well as a score of first place finishes and at least a dozen blue ribbons.
In the 4-H age group, Michael Brown earned a Grand Champion prize for the first time and a second place finish in the Market Lamb category. He also placed fourth in the Fitting and Showing category for lambs. Mike bought his champion lamb from Randall Updike at an auction Mr. Updike held in May. Since then, Mike has been feeding and preparing the lamb for the show. It was sold at the . Livestock Sale Monday evening. ’ Elizabeth Oliver received a first place prize in the market steer competition, as well as four sewing competitions. She made a skirt and blouse with fabric from the Rush River Company in Washington. She also made an apron, a laundry bag, a trapunto pillow and a hand puppet. She took home a total of seven first place awards, as well as a second place in the string art competition for her geometric design.
Susannah McNear, who has been competing in the CMR Farm Show for six years, won second place in the Fitting and Showing competition for lambs and fourth and fifth place in the Market Lamb category. After taking a break from horseback riding, Susannah began taking riding lessons again last October. Her lessons obviously helped since she placed fifth in the Equestrian division.
Susannah also competed in the Stockman’s Contest. The contest consists of questions about medicines, breeds, identifying grains and tools. Another part of the competition was judging. Each contestant had to judge sheep, cows, market lambs, beef and pigs.
In the Barn Display category, Susannah and her sister Laura placed second. In this competition each person or team made a project, preferably education-related, about farming. Susannah created a calendar of the important dates in the
