an economist with the U.S. Department of Labor. She’d enjoyed drawing and painting as a child but by college, she’d realized the difficulty of making a living as an artist and so she took political science and economics, not fine arts. Then when she’d earned enough money as an economist, she began studying art with Jennie Knight at the Alexandria Gallery established by Ms. Knight and Joy Luke, Rappahannock County’s resident authority on color and an artist herself. “But the more I painted, the more I wondered, ‘How can I paint more?’ I had no time for painting!”
