More than 1,000 School Board members, school administrators, local elected officials and other interested persons, including six from Rappahannock County, met July 22 in Richmond to attend Governor Baliles’ Conference on Education.
The Rappahannock representatives were Beverly Massie, Nancy Reeves and Bryant Lee from the School Board, John McCarthy, representing the Board of Supervisors, and Lee Bird and Ronald Frazier, candidates for the Board of Supervisors in Hampton and Jackson Districts, respectively.
The highlight of the conference was an address by Governor Baliles, who stressed the need to improve education in keeping with the growing demands of social and economic development in Virginia. “We have already witnessed unprecedented and accelerated change in the 20th century,” he said, “and we will have to continue to prepare for continuing changes in the 21st.”
