Early in the month one can expect the annual appearance of the heavenly fireworks display of the Perseids. Beginning in late July and continuing through mid-August, these so-called “shooting stars” at the rate of about one a minute at the height of the shower are a result of the Earth passing through the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle. They are usually more frequent during the early morning hours.
In the garden, keep after unwanted weeds that rob moisture and valuable nutrients from your vegetables and flowers. A good layer of mulch helps retain moisture, keeps down weeds and makes the soil cooler during hot August days.
