Dr. Gangel confirmed that the State Board had recently passed those requirements and that he will soon take up the matter with the Rappahannock County School Board.
The graduating class of 1992 will need 21 units of credit for a general diploma and 23 for an academic diploma, the superintendent said, adding that the new requirements fall primarily in the arts category.
Mrs. Kilpatrick noted that world culture and world geography will be necessary for graduation in addition to the social studies courses already required.
“There are many, many, many changes,” Dr. Gangel agreed.
Reading lab program changes
Mrs. Kilpatrick also asked why the primary reading lab at the elementary school has been discontinued.
“It has not been dropped,” Mrs. Massie replied. She reported that Dr. Gangel has reviewed the reading lab program and that it will continue in 1987-88 “as it was run in 1986-87.”
She conceded that the curriculum changed this past year, that a “different approach” had been taken. Previously, remedial help was offered in the reading lab on the basis of the classroom teachers’ directions,
she said. More recently, however, “other problems” were looked at, resulting in “individual programs geared to what the children needed.”
This past year, “children were brought up to speed in the lab so they could go back to their regular classroom and keep up,” the chairman said.
