In the open class, Flo Duvall competed in the Make-Over category. In this category contestants take throw-away items and try to make something useful out of it. Mrs. Duvall made a skirt out of silk ties, and received a blue ribbon for her effort. She also entered a pillow in the sewing competition. It had lace edges and a butterfly, and earned her a white ribbon.
Lillian Crews entered an apple pie in the Baking Competition. She said that the pie was a combination between a “Crisco” crust and the way her mother made apple pies. It took first place and earned a blue ribbon.
Mrs. Crews, well-known around Rappahannock County for her talents as a seamstress, entered the wedding dress she made for her daughter and won a blue ribbon in the Dressy Dress competition. She
