Culpeper Memorial Hospital and Dr. Harold Markham hosted a delegation of 29 Soviet physicians in a cultural exchange program to learn about the delivery of health care in the United States.
The visit to Culpeper on Friday, July 17 was a result of the physicians’ desire to see how American health care is delivered in rural communities. Culpeper Memorial Hospital, the Culpeper Health Care Center and Dr. Markham’s private family practice were considered by the Academy of Family Physicians to be well-situated examples of primary health care facilities.
The physicians arrived in the United States on July 5 and visited large medical centers and university-affiliated hospitals in New York, Boston and Washington before coming to Culpeper.
“Now that they’ve seen glorified medicine, we want to show them what real practice is all about,” said Dr. Markham, vice-president of the Academy.
