Governor Baliles stressed that we must heighten the understanding our students have of the world in which they live, since that world is in the process of becoming, through modem telecommunications, a “global village,” of which Virginia is a small but important part. Finally, he said, we must impart to our students a joy in education and through innovative programs make Virginia a leader in education in the years ahead.
In addition to Governor Baliles, two other speakers addressed the group. Dr. John J. Hunt, associate professor of Educational Leadership at the University of South Florida, talked on teachers’ need for enhanced recognition and financial benefits and the problems of school discipline. On both points, he offered some unexpected and unusual solutions.
He was followed by Dr. Michael D. Usdan, president of the Institute for Educational Leadership, who addressed some of the functions of school boards and the role they play in establishing grass roots leadership in school affairs.
