Highway Foreman - Sign Crew

The Virginia Department of Transportation has 1 opening for Highway Foreman - Sign Crew at the Warrenton Residency. Applications are available at the Warrenton Highway Residency Office or at the Virginia Employment Commission. Completed applications must be submitted before 5:00 p.m. on July 31,1987. Duties: Instructs employees on work methods, equipment operations, and safety practices. This includes answering employee questions about work procedures; conducting on-the-job training for employees, and safety meetings. Supervises the daily activities of a work crew in order to ensure the effective and efficient use of personnel, time and materials. Operates equipment and performs manual labor in order to assist in the accomplishment of the work and to fill in for absent equipment operators. Fills out forms and makes notes in order to maintain records of such things as work accomplished, materials used, and expenses charged to various accounts. Read plans and rough sketches in order to determine what work is to be done, and how it is to be done. Plans and coordinates work schedules in conjunction with other work crew supervisors or Department of Corrections field unit superintendent. Plans schedules for plant mix, surface treatment, and slurry seal. Answers questions from the public about such things as travel directions, work methods, and agency procedures. Orders materials and schedules delivery. Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of highway construction and maintenance equipment, materials, and methods; knowledge of simple English and arithmetic; ability to read and understand written instructions; ability to plan, layout, instruct and supervise the work of skilled, semi-skilled, and manual labor, ability to keep accurate records of costs and progress; ability to meet the public, ability to work within budgets; valid Virginia Operator's license and ability to operate light-duty highway equipment. Must be physically able to perform heavy manual labor. Willingness to be sworn in as a peace officer to supervise convict labor. Safety shoes required in the performance of the above duties. Graduation from high school or equivalent and experience related to hwy construction and maintenance work, or a combination of experience and training which provides the receding knowledge, skills and abilities. Salary: $16,025 - 921,889
